I’ll be starting a new job next month : )
I resigned from my last job after working there almost 2 years, because it was a 5 hour drive from my family. Too much wasted time on weekends driving back and forth.
Will update my profile after I start and get settled in. One of my first tasks may be a trip to Aramco, to get a project sorted out.

This article covers quite a bit of ground. Some points I agree with, some I don’t. But it made me think about a few of the items discussed.
Unlike the author, I still think the “sweet spot” for oil in the longer run is in the range of $50 – $60 per barrel, and not higher than $65.
For the last couple years or so, up until around Q3 / Q4 of…[Read more]
Our Latest Oil PredicamentIt is impossible to tell the whole oil story, but perhaps I can offer a few insights regarding where we are today. [1] We already seem to be back to the falling oil prices and refilling storage tan…

U.S. Shale’s Dirty Secret is *actually* its ever-increasing debt.
But this article ignores the debt issue, and instead shunts over to the smaller problem that the majority of refineries globally simply cannot handle large amounts of the very light crude oil (and condensate) of U.S. shale oil.
Which means that eventually, the seemingly inevitable…[Read more]
U.S. Shale’s Dirty Secret | OilPrice.comOil analysts are constantly discussing the success of U.S. shale in gaining market share from OPEC, a narrative that does not hold up to closer inspection

@tomkirkman I know that US refineries are regulated and there hasn’t been a new refinery constructed in a long time. But, internationally are there new refineries coming online that can increase global refining capacity? This seems like a under talked about bottleneck in the supply and demand formula.
-
@ritafarr refineries can be modified to process additional types of crude, but it is expensive to modify.
If there becomes a significant surplus of very light crude and condensate from U.S. shale oil, then the prices should go down, and that would offer financial incentive for more refineries to adapt to processing U.S. shale oil and…[Read more]

Mike Shellman has a pretty unique voice in the O&G biz. Here is his historical take on Lusi, the oil well induced mud volcano in Indonesia.

IMO, labor unions should have no part in the oil & gas industry.
United Steelworkers sues BP after it cut union-represented positions on North SlopeThe Pennsylvania-based union, representing more than 100 North Slope workers, said BP violated an agreement when union-represented jobs were cut at the Prudhoe Bay oil field.
-
Tom,
It may be time for the Union model to be overhauled, not terminated. Really, it works well for Professional Sports (Players Associations, which are essentially unions) so it “in theory” should be able to work with some tweaking
-
Ian, there should be some kind of balance between companies and workers. When either side get too powerful, things don’t go so well.
Unions in O&G are not exactly a good fit, as the O&G biz can be feast and famine cycles.
In this instance, the labor union is suing BP because BP wants to do something which seems like good business sense, which…[Read more]

That’s why I mentioned adopting a PA model, if at all – they can’t exist in the current rigid incarnation, not in O&G.
You’re right, probably best not at all

The global LNG trade is changing. The earlier “normal” of 20 year contracts is getting slowly shunted to the side, as LNG spot trading starts to get its sea legs after making it through the global shakedown cruise.

Executives offer different perspectives on evolving LNG marketTwo of Houston's most prominent liquefied natural gas executives agreed more infrastructure is needed to support a fast-growing market but offered different views on how the sector could evolve as more export facilities come online.

This is a great article! I’ve been thinking about this rhetoric this past week, and completely agree with the final statement – it’s all predicated on other producers continuing to cut and maintain current cut levels.
-
Mike Shellman routinely writes great stuff on his blog. I wish more people would pay attention to his musings on U.S. shale oil economics.

The Tylers do a good job dismantling the U.S. media hype.
U.S. “energy independence” remains a pipe dream and “fake news”.
The U.S. is *by far* a net energy importer, and will most likely remain a net energy importer for the foreseeable future. Even more so when the rapid decline rates of shale oil really start to kick in. The best tight oil…[Read more]
The Truth About U.S. Energy DominanceIt's worth noting that nobody was touting American "energy dominance" when the net energy import number last hovered around this value in the early 1980s.
