IMO, labor unions should have no part in the oil & gas industry.
United Steelworkers sues BP after it cut union-represented positions on North SlopeThe Pennsylvania-based union, representing more than 100 North Slope workers, said BP violated an agreement when union-represented jobs were cut at the Prudhoe Bay oil field.
Tom,
It may be time for the Union model to be overhauled, not terminated. Really, it works well for Professional Sports (Players Associations, which are essentially unions) so it “in theory” should be able to work with some tweaking
Ian, there should be some kind of balance between companies and workers. When either side get too powerful, things don’t go so well.
Unions in O&G are not exactly a good fit, as the O&G biz can be feast and famine cycles.
In this instance, the labor union is suing BP because BP wants to do something which seems like good business sense, which is getting rid of one subcontractor (the union based far away in New Jersey) with a local Alaskan subcontractor.
That’s why I mentioned adopting a PA model, if at all – they can’t exist in the current rigid incarnation, not in O&G.
You’re right, probably best not at all
